A few days later, her mother’s presence was unannounced at the funeral. She made it perfectly clear whom she was showing support to when she hugged Vic tightly, whispering what had to be condolences. She passed by Yvette with cursory eyes.

When the burial was over, Yvette had a moment with her mother. Jacquelyn was elegantly slipping into the back of the car. A man Yvette did not recognize held the door open.

“Mother, I want to talk.”

Jacquelyn paused, looked at the chauffeur. “Did you hear something? Did it not sound like a selfish little bird calling for help?”

“Mom, stop it.”

“Oh, look. Here’s the little bird now. I wonder if this little bird is here to peck my bones clean.”

“Enough, Mom. I get it. You’re not happy with me.” Yvette glanced nervously at the chauffeur; even as a child, she’d never been comfortable with having personal discussions in front of the help. “I wanted to say I’m sorry about yelling over the phone the other day. I know you’re upset with me, and I didn’t want that to happen.”

Two hands tenderly cupped Yvette’s cheeks. “Little Bird, do me a favor, please.” Her mother’s blue eyes iced over to grey. “Tell your handsome hubby, your wonderful—no, your astounding hubby—if he needs to talk, he can feel free to get in touch with his mother-in-law. Tell him she would be more than happy to help him through this difficult time. She’d even feel obliged to make a house call if necessary.” She patted Yvette’s cheeks and floated back. The door was shut.
